WFWM Public Radio Hosts Special Screening The Grateful Dead Movie At Frostburg’s Palace Theatre for One-Night Fundraising Event

The Palace Theatre in Frostburg will present a special screening of The Grateful Dead Movie on Saturday, Aug. 8, hosted by Frostburg State University’s public radio station WFWM Public Radio.

Directed by Jerry Garcia and released in 1977, the film captures performances from the Grateful Dead's legendary five-night run at San Francisco's Winterland Ballroom in 1974, offering fans a front-row seat to one of rock music’s most iconic live acts.

The evening also celebrates the legacy of "Dead Air," WFWM's popular Grateful Dead radio program that aired from 1992 to 1996. The event is dedicated to longtime WFWM radio personality and "Dead Air" co-host Gary "Woldo" Wolz M’97, whose passion for the music helped build a loyal community of listeners throughout the region.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Palace Theatre's Sound & Vision Project, a fundraising campaign to modernize the theatre’s audiovisual systems. The project includes the installation of a new immersive surround sound system and the purchase of a state-of-the-art 2K digital projection system, ensuring audiences can enjoy exceptional sound and picture quality while preserving the historic theater for future generations.

Originally opened in 1937, the Palace Theatre has long been a cornerstone of downtown Frostburg's arts and entertainment community, hosting films, concerts and special events that bring residents and visitors together.

Doors open at 7 p.m., and the movie begins at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $10 at the door, with all proceeds supporting the Palace Theatre's Sound & Vision Project.

Community members, Grateful Dead fans and supporters of local arts and public radio are invited to attend this unique evening celebrating music, history and a chance to support two beloved Frostburg institutions.
