What to Bring

icon-check.png When helping your student prepare for college there are many items one might consider bringing. Here are some suggestions from the Residence Life Office.

General Room Items

  • If you bring an area rug, 6’ by 9’ is usually sufficient
  • Basic tools – Screwdriver, pliers, hammer, multi-use tool
  • Portable shelves/Stacking storage units
  • Full-length mirror with over the door hanger (do not affix to walls or doors)
  • Waste paper basket
  • Bike and bike lock (must be stored outside, not in student room)
  • Games: a deck of playing cards, board games, etc.

Electronics

  • Television (smart TV or Roku stick needed to connect to IPTV)
  • Entertainment electronics
  • Cell phone and charger
  • Fan - either a box or windowsill model, no air conditioners
  • Surge protector/power strips with circuit breakers; must be grounded or surge protected
  • Small flashlight, extra batteries
  • Computer/laptop/tablet and charger
  • Headphones/earbuds with microphone

Clothes and Linens

  • Selection of clothing for season including cold weather clothing
  • Rain gear/umbrella, boots, coat, jacket, swimsuit, sports workout clothes
  • Bed sheets (extra-long twin size), egg-crate or memory foam mattress pad, pillow, bedspread, and blankets

Laundry Items

  • Each hall has a laundry room with washers and dryers available for residents
  • Laundry detergent (high efficiency machines)
  • Laundry basket (mesh, pop-up)/duffel bag, fabric softener, dryer sheets
  • Clothes stain remover, clothes hangers, iron, and table-top ironing board

Health and Beauty Supplies

  • Towels and washcloths
  • Toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, deodorant, mouthwash, and facial tissues
  • First-aid kit, including bandages and over-the-counter pain relievers; other medications, vitamins
  • Shampoo, soap and a soap dish, tote for bathroom essentials, shower shoes, hair dryer, curling iron

Office Supplies

  • Desk lamp
  • Flash drive or external hard drive
  • Pens, pencils, highlighters, scotch/masking tape, scissors, ruler, paper clips, stapler, three-hole punch, rubber bands, note cards, post-it notes
  • Notebooks, folders, binders, calculator, backpack/book bag, ruler
  • Planner/calendar/organizer, envelopes, postage stamps

Kitchen and Cleaning Items

  • Utensils (knife, fork, spoon), cup, plate, bowl
  • Dish soap, paper towels, trash can, trash bags, Ziploc bags
  • Reusable water bottle, snacks, and soft drinks
  • Small cooking appliances without hotplate/open heating element (tea kettle, Keurig-style coffee maker, popcorn air popper, rice cooker)

Personal Items

  • Include Residence Hall Room on Homeowners' or Renters Insurance, bring insurance card/health insurance information
  • All necessary papers: financial aid forms, class schedule, campus map

What NOT to Bring

icon-x.png The following items are ones that the Residence Life Office does not allow or permit students to bring. Should a student be found to have these items within their residence hall room, they could face student conduct reprimands.

Decorative Items

  • Curtains, unless flame retardant, all windows have blinds
  • LED Lights, strip lights
  • Candles, incense, fireworks, any open flame source
  • Halogen light bulbs
  • Lava lamps
  • Wax burners with lightbulbs
  • Removable wallpaper or wall decals – they do not remove easily and damage paint
  • Christmas trees (only under 2-foot artificial trees are permissible)
  • Anything that will damage wall surface
  • Wall mount for television
  • Wall hangings over 6x6 feet
  • Sofa/futon
  • Bean bags over 3 feet wide

Appliances

  • Cooking is prohibited in all student rooms except university-supplied microwave attached to MicroFridge Smoke Sensor combination unit
  • Air fryer, deep fryer
  • Crock pot
  • Pressure cooker
  • InstaPot
  • Hot plates, electric skillet, griddle, any appliance with open or exposed heating element
  • Toaster/Toaster oven/Convection oven
  • Coffee pot with hot plate (Keurig-type machines allowed)
  • Outdoor grilling appliances

Electronics

  • Space heater/heating blanket
  • Extension cords or strip outlets without surge protectors
  • Air conditioner
  • Doorbell cameras facing outside of room

Miscellaneous

  • Weapons
  • Tattoo guns, needles, and tattoo paraphernalia
  • Needles, piercing guns, and items used for piercing
  • Martial arts devices
  • Free weights over 10 pounds
  • CO2 cartridges
  • Drones
  • Power tools
  • Waterbeds
  • Additional door locks
  • Pets
  • Drugs and drug paraphernalia
  • Full or empty kegs
  • Wired or wireless router
  • Electronic scooters/hoverboards, etc.
  • Any flammable materials
